2021.12.05 17:44 SevenGill-Shark Hot Take: Predators/Yautja are overrated
People seem to think that they are the strongest when it comes to the big three (Humans, Xenomorphs and Predators) but that's wrong. If anything, they belong on the second spot at best. The only reason the Yautja are as successful as they are is because of their technology and weapons, similar to humans. If they were stripped of those, the Xenomorphs would manhandle them 24/7 with an extra amount of disrespectful. It's like a human hunting a tiger with a rifle and a spear. Obviously those give the human a huge advantage but without them the human would he done for.
Xenomorphs don't need any of that because they themselves are living weapons.

2021.12.05 17:44 Sea_Collection_5045 Long Promised Road soundtrack…thoughts?
I’ve been listening to the new album/soundtrack from that new documentary on Brian.
It’s great! Who would’ve expected that on this album, we would get a bunch of Paley sessions cuts, and rehearsals of songs from Brian’s probably never going to be released “rock and roll” throwback album. The new song with the Morning Jacket guy isn’t bad either. Very poignant. Overall not my favorite but definitely had a good week spinning the album.

2021.12.05 17:44 twhitle Can an old root cellar be made into a storage area/basement?
I live in a house that was built in the early 1940s. Underneath the house there is an old root cellar that used to have access from the upstairs but the previous owners closed it off and made it a storage closet with an air return. The space of the root cellar is roughly 13 x 13 with two small windows facing the outside. The only access to the root cellar is by opening up the door to the crawlspace and crawling underneath the house. My question is how difficult would it be to convert this area into a storage area underneath the house that I could use and have access from the upstairs. I am just brainstorming here and not planning on ripping out any walls or anything soon I was just wanting to know if there’s anything that I should consider and think of before making any decisions on trying to convert this root cellar into a basement storage area. Also if there’s anybody out there that has any experience with such a project what did you run into when completing the project. Thanks

2021.12.05 17:44 scaredjazzhands I hate how negatively Midwestern culture is portrayed around the U.S.
I'm a woman from the Midwest who recently moved to the West Coast. Thanks to all things COVID and finances, I haven't been able to visit my family in the Midwest for the last few years. While on the West coast, I've heard all sorts of negative perceptions of the Midwest:
-"Midwestern nice is fake nice"
-"Midwesterners need to learn to speak up louder"
-"Using ma'am just makes women feel older"
I've usually just let these small comments slide, because: 1) they're usually not a big deal, 2) it's not worth it to get into a diatribe each and every time, and 3) *surprise* I'm soft spoken.
But if I could really get it off my chest, I really really do miss "Midwestern nice." Finally, this last week I was able to visit my family for Thanksgiving. Here are a few things I noticed:
While I was back out there, people (of all genders) held doors open for each other. Once, while I was waiting for a coffee (at an empty cashier register), another man started another line at another empty cashier register. His register got an employee first and he gestured for me to go in front of him because he noticed that I had been waiting longer. This is true for driving, too - you respect the "order" of the line so everyone waits about the same time (e.g., if merging over when a bus stops or something).
When I went grocery shopping, someone had dropped something on the floor and it made a big mess. Almost everyone passing by the spill smiled at the sorry person and made some sort of corny joke to make them feel better, "Clean up on aisle three!" "A little early for a Saturday, isn't it?" or just a simple "Oh dear, can I help you with that?" When checking out, the cashier complimented my hair and asked me how my day was going. I can't remember any interactions like that within my last few years on the West Coast.
I know these are all anecdotal - but it just reminded me that I wasn't "hallucinating" this fantasy land where people generally care about each other and demonstrate basic empathy.
Also, for conversation, I heard a mom call her daughter "ma'am" just to respect her small request for candy. And it made me remember that 'ma'am' is more a respectful thing that we're taught (regardless of age). Like, I would call a teacher (younger than me) "ma'am" just to demonstrate respect. I hate having to justify this every time it slips out in conversation with a woman who gets offended.
And for speaking quietly, I found that generally people cut each other off less and follow-up with each other if they think they did. I recognize that I'm quieter / more introverted by nature, but it's far more common for someone in the Midwest to say something like, "Oops! I'm sorry, what were you going to say?" and check back in on me. Whereas in the West Coast, if I had a dollar for every time I heard "Just let me know if I cut you off," then maybe I could pay off my student loans... I hate hearing that I have to speak up louder (which feels like yelling from my perspective) and policing other people's conversation skills - instead of other people being self-aware enough to recognize that they're not hearing my responses and actually trying to have a balanced conversation with me.
It irks me overall how negatively I see the Midwest portrayed when I, for one, really love / miss some of the niceties from that culture. I know it's not perfect by any means, but I still think there's some merits that could benefit other regions, too.
(In anticipation of people pointing out that I'm complaining too much and/or should consider moving back to the Midwest due to cultural conflicts: I probably will look into moving closer when I'm able. I just wanted people from other regions of the U.S. to possibly hear a different perspective of the Midwest.)

2021.12.05 17:44 Girl1432 Kitchenaid Mixer broken on first use.
My husband and I took a year to decide what we were going to treat ourselves to with our wedding money
Something we can both enjoy.
He loves baking and I love eating his home made bagels. We spent $2000.00 our wedding money, on the professional grade kitchen aid food mixer.
My husband was so excited. No more kneeding thick heavy bagel dough by hand.
Today was the first day we used it to kneed the dough. We kneaded it on the lowest setting so as not to strain and break it because bagel dough is dense and heavy.
Less than 10 minutes into kneading there is smoke, gears grinding, and its broken. WTF? WTF is the mixer for if not doughs? We weren't going to make cake batters, or soups in it. We dont make or eat cakes, and cookies etc. We specifically bought the more expensive heaviest duty one to mix our heavy dense doughs.
